Lighting Articles–: In reference to (camera) lighting, what is a stop?
trying to learn about three point lighting and the article says that the “fill light is about two “stops” dimmer than the key.” What exactly does that mean and/or better yet is there a site someone can point me in that would help me in understanding video/lighting/etc. thanks
The following is the answer: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)
Answer by fhotoace
If the reading on your incident light meter is 1/60 th second at f/11, one stop “down” would use the same shutter speed but need to be exposed at f/8, one stop difference from f/11, two stops would show an exposure of f/5.6 would be appropriate.
A stop down is one half the amount of light falling on the subject. Two stops down would be one quarter the light falling on the subject.
Once you get an incident light meter and some lights, you will see how easy it is to make adjustments with your lighting.
The article you read is setting up a shot with a 1:4 lighting ratio … there are others
Answer by FotoZ 4 FX
A stop is twice or half the equivalent shutter or f/stop provided to expose an image.
If you shoot 1/60th of a second, a stop over would be 1/30th, a stop under would be 1/125th.
If you set your aperture at f/8, a stop over would be opening to f/4, stopping under would be closing down to f/16.
You can accomplish the same effect with altering your ISO setting.

Bien vu, bien fait!
Wonderful image..
Les indiens!!!! Fuyons!!!!
