Q&A–: What colored filter can you use to create the “magic hour” lighting effect?
I am using strobes and want to buy a filter to place over the lights to create the “magic hour” feel. Very intense sunset feel. I just don’t know which filter to get. Gels, right? What color code? I don’t know enough about the color codes to understand which filter to get. Can you put a filter over a soft box?

gel a soft box why not,
magic hour light is a result of the sun belng low in the sky, not gels, get the exposure right in the change of light and you will get the desired quality

Golden hour lighting is a combination of things. First, the angle of the light is low, so the catch lights in the eyes look a certain way and shadows are longer and closer to horizontal. Colors are more saturated, and they take on a golden/reddish color.
You might want to try a Straw filter (that’s the color). I sometimes put this on my kicker/hair light to give a softer look. Try gold reflectors as well.
