Question–: General quantum phsycis question – question on nature of light and physics of if?
I could wiki this but i have specific questions

Is it particle or wave? why does it seem to have diffusive properties?

How exactly does a photon become more solid matter? what is the relation between and electron and a photon?

And where do gamma particles and such come into play – where are they related to light, how do they work?

The following is the answer: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)

Answer by elfmotat
Photons are neither particles nor waves. There is no other way to understand them other than to say that they are photons. Quantum particles are not analagous to anything familiar to you. They have both wave and particle properties, and sometimes it is convenient to treat them as either particles or waves for a particular problem, but they are fundamentally neither.

Photons do NOT “become more solid matter.” They are always just photons – massless particles that travel at c.

An electron will give off a photon if it jumps to a lower energy level. Photons can also be absorbed by electrons, and thus excite them to a higher energy. Photons are also the particles that transmit the electromagnetic force, and since electrons have charge, they are fundamentally linked.

Gamma rays are just photons with higher energy and frequency. They are made up of the same particles as regular light – they are both part of the electromagnetic spectrum. They are emitted in high-energy reaction, like nuclear reactions.

General Lighting Questions –: General questions about art museums…?
1. What are some of the biggest factors one should consider when choosing a type of architecture/architect? (i.e. lighting, design, materials, ect)
2. Why do art museums as buildings tend to concentrate on being so creative in apperance? I know it seems intuative, but can’t put it into words.
3. When comming up with a design, how should the museum be related to history, if at all? Should the builder just concentrate on functionality or worry about symbolism too?

The answer in the following: (Hint: The reader is not the correct identification.)

1) The main factor must be the traffic flow. How do people get around the museum from exhibit to exhibit? Are there places where traffic backs up? Is the flow easy to follow so that a visitor sees all of an exhibit and doesnt miss parts of it? Lighting is the second most important consideration – some exhibits require very bright intense lighting and others like the Degas pastels at the Met in NY are exhibited practically in the dark to protect them from damage. Next, I would consider materials. I am a believer in environmentally responsible, sustainable materials, but they also have to be durable to handle large amounts of traffic and hold up well so that there is little down time for repairs. Lastly, I would consider security and safety — sprinkler systems to protect the art from damage, properly filtered air with proper levels of humidity and state of the art security systems.

2) Because architecture is art, too. The building is also a work of art.

3) I wouldnt be too worried about history. I would be much more concerned with form following function, but it is nice when a building fits in with other buildings in the area. However, the Gehry in Bilbao and the Guggenheim in NYC certainly dont fit into the neighborhoods – their designs are very much ahead of anything around them. Others like the Met fit in more with their surroundings.

Hope that helps. Pax- C

1. There is usually one preliminary matter to be settled: the choice of a site.Where several possibilities are available, the drawbacks and advantages of each must be carefully weighed. Moreover, space will always be available-at least in theory-for future expansion, either by enlargement of the original building or by construction of connected annexes.
Design should be based on the type of building as museums.. A belt of trees surrounding the meseum building serves as an effective natural filter for dust and for the chemical discharges that polute the air of a modern industrial town.
There are several types of lighting:the natural lighting, overhead lighting and lateral lighting.By experience, natural lighting may seemed to be the best.Daylight is still the best means of lighting a museum, despite the variations and difficulties which characterized it at different seasons and in different places. The building should therefore be so planned as to make the best use of this source of light, even of certain other structural features have to be sacrificed as a result.

2.A museum is not like an exhibition, to be broken up after a short time and brought together later in an entirely different form. Ther should be nothing “ephemeral” in this character or appearance, even where the possibility of changes of temprary arrangements is to be contemplated.

3.A museum building shoul be imposing in appearance, solemn and monumental. The worst of it is that this effect is often sought through the adoption of an archaic style of architecture. We are all acquainted with deplorable instances of new buildings constructed in imitation of the antique:they produce a markedly antihistorical impression, just because they were inspired by a false view of history. Another outmoded prejudice is that which demands a “classical” setting fo ancient work of art,as though their venerable dignity would suffer and their aesthetic value be diminished if they were placed in modern surroundings. In other words we must not devote our entire effort to designing rooms which they will be architecturally pleasing:it is at least equally important that attention be concentrated on the works exhibited, that their mise en valuer be insured and their predominance established.Hope it helps

I wandered outside this evening to take pictures of the leaves still hanging from my trees, but then looked down and noticed how wonderful my skirt looked with the sun and yellow leaves beneath it. These pictures just make me happy, which I needed.

Now I don’t normally do things like this; I usually just keep these things to myself, but I am feeling like I need to do some slight explaining, as well as some venting.

I have been going through some things with my photography lately. First, I have been frustrated with myself that I used to be obsessed (maybe that isn’t the right word, because it was a good thing) with getting my 365 done and posted on time. But lately I just haven’t seemed to care as much about getting it in on time. I still take the picture yes, but more often than not I don’t seem to put all that much effort into it. This project is important to me, so I don’t know why I can’t seem to stay on top of it anymore. However, as of tonight, I am re-dedicating myself to this project. I WILL get my picture posted every night unless something major comes up (that makes me nervous to make that promise…but here we go).

The second big thing that has been frustrating me, is from earlier this week. I was venting to Elliot about how I was just down about photography in general, and he asked me a very simple, but important two questions: "Why do you like photography? Why do you want to take pictures?" And I didn’t (and still don’t) have a good answer, or rather any answer for him. I used to have such a good explanation for why I wanted to be a photographer, but since I have gotten into the more commercial side, with weddings and stuff with my internship, I have seemed to lost sight of why I wanted to become a photographer in the first place. Now I realize that it is inevitable that my vision will change after 5 years of taking pictures, but it makes me sad, and angry, that I don’t have a solid answer as to why I want to take pictures. So, my goal within the next week, is to sit down and write out why I love photography. And I hope that this can get the firing burning inside me again.
