Ceiling Lights –: Can I hard wire a clap on/off switch into my ceiling lights?
I have regular 110v power and regular ceiling lights, but the switch is in an awkward spot…how could I make this a clap on/off setup?

I think you would have to open up the Clapper and remove it from the housing then wire it into the circuit. I definitely wouldn’t recommend doing this. You could try a wireless switch mounted to a convenient point on your wall (with double sided tape or screwed to the wall). These are available at

Yes you can. take the wiring for the light fixture and wire it as if it were an outlet. then purchase a plug connector and wire that up. plug everything together and viola!!!

Ceiling Lights –: How can I turn off the ceiling lights in the hallway of my dorm?
The people living in my hallway and I want to be able to turn off the lights in the hall at least partially because theyre so bright. There are no light switches to them at all. They have a “test switch” that turns half of one light off but you have to hold the switch. Will we need to look at building schematics or anything like that?

In short, no. Most US collage dorms (besides some not regulated by department of health) are required to have their public lights (hall ways, entrance, stuff like that) run on a closed circuit to a breaker, meaning the breakers (like the ones in most houses now a days) are the switches. So unless you can get into the utility closet and find the breaker box, you are out of luck. However, SOME older dorms still use the old key style switches….the ones that look like light switches but just have an open line down the middle where the switch is suppose to be. You will need a toothed key to be able to stick in there and turn it on or off. Dont just stick a flat head in there, it wont work.

i think dark brown would be good as it will match the cabinets and make a good combination and color scheme, too many diverse colors in kitchen will ruin the symmetry of the colors and make them seem too widespread,

I would say…..Brown. It sounds like you already have a lot of tans and browns. I think a white or even almond sink would jump out at you too much. I think your eye would go to it immediately when you walk into the kitchen area.

Kitchen Island Lighting–: Ideas for lighting and decor in open floor plan (picture incl)?
The picture shows what it looks like from my living room. I have two wimpy lights on the short wall and framed fluorescent lights in the kitchen over an island. What lighting would be best for the short wall and the kitchen area? I do like how bright the kitchen is with the fluorescent lighting but I hate the dated frames.

The two accent lights on the short wall are dwarfed by the expanse of the wall/ceiling. We would like it to be brighter when those are turned on. We usually only use those for when we are trying to do something in the LR or when we leave for the evening.

I don’t care for the dark brown color on the short wall (I don’t know what else to call that since it starts at the ceiling). The color was suggested by my s-i-l to pull together the dark cherry cabinets in the kitchen. Plus we have dark chocolate brown furniture.

Also, any ideas on what to put on the “shelf” in the open space below the ceiling to the left would be appreciated!

BTW..the closet door isn’t painted green. The outside of the front door is, and it’s open in this picture.

Also, we don’t use the sconce lighting really for any task lighting really. Mostly we use it for when we are away.

Your S-I-L gave you good advise with staining the short wall the same finish as your kitchen cabinets. It looks great.

Most light fixtures on the short wall will look kinda awkward because it is an unusual light source to have light fixtures up that high. However, I think I have a couple of ideas that would work:

Put up a piece of molding even with the bottom of the short wall which is a crown molding of sorts, with a nook behind it so you can string lights hidden behind the molding. This creates great accent lighting, however, it does not illuminate enough for task lighting. You can find the string of rope lights I am referring to at a home improvement store — and, no, not the Christmas tree variety of lights.

Decoratively, things look better in odd numbers. So, if you were to stick with light fixtures, you should get three of them. The type of light fixtures I would select are ones that have an ‘arm’ and point downwards, as that style of lighting will be effective if you need task lighting in that area. And, they should be at least twice the size of what you have up there now. Scale is important here.

As for the shelf. Do not put any fake plants up there, please. Baskets harbor a great place for insect nests, so avoid that mistake, too. I would pick something a little more upscale. If you go with the rope lighting I suggested, then objects that look good with a light source would be great. Like a collection of large glass vases of different sizes in pretty colors. That would reflect beautifully when the lights are on. Glass vases are reasonably priced at T J Max, Marshall’s and Home Goods. Or you could get those huge glass containers that have pretty shaped glass lids (not canisters) which are curvaceous in shape and fill them with colored water.

I do not know what to tell you about those three.florescent ceiling lights in the kitchen. My boyfriend has the exact same one in his kitchen and we are surely changing it once we find the right fixture when painting time comes in a couple of months. I am doing a simple Google search for lighting to find what I am looking for because the home improvement store selection is not diverse enough for my taste. However, pendant lighting can be a great light source for you.

Your ‘dilemma’ gives you the opportunity to make a great design statement. I would be sure to pick the short wall lighting and the kitchen lighting at the same time to avoid a mistake.

With dark brown furniture and dark cabinets,you already have a lot of dark brown. The room will appear brighter and reflect more light from your light sources if you paint the dark brown short upper wall a lighter shade. A semi-gloss will reflect more light than a flat paint. Consider using the same color as on the wall with the coat rack. Either disguise the fluorescent frames by painting them the same color as the ceiling, or replace them. Cloud lights appear frameless, and look good too. My personal preference is to install new recessed lights (can lights) and take out the fluorescent ones, but you said you do like the light from them and I’m not sure what your budget will allow.
As for the shelf, this is a good place for decorative plates, painted gourds, pottery, a silver tray with candlesticks (do not light the candles!) propped up on the wall, whatever suits your style.
If the paint treatment isn’t reflecting enough light, changing the sconces would be my next suggestion. Lowe’s and most home improvement stores have a good online selection of sconces and pendant lights.

Easy stuff first…

The shelf on the left is begging for a grouping of 3-5 antiques, the tallest of which should be the farthest to the left in the corner creating an asymmetrical pyramid profile when grouped together. You could use baskets, milk cans, clocks, vases, an antique framed photo, a doll, books, whatever you like in variety or as a collection, i.e. five clocks or five dolls. The swans in the poster made me think it might look good in the rest of the room. If antiques are going to look out of place, use more modern items. Use something that reflects your personality, though. If you fish, use poles and tackle, see what I mean?

The “short wall” is more or less a bulkhead. The two lights there are begging to be replaced by some kind of spots that are directed to the ceiling to bounce the light to those below. It’s the best kind of light you can have. A lighting bar with three small spotlights might actually look better as groups of three or five are aesthetically more attractive than pairs of things in most cases. You might want to consider using something with a dimmer to set the mood, but remember that you cannot use a dimmer with fluorescent bulbs, okay? What’s great is that the wiring is already there, so you can do anything you want with it.
If you don’t like the color it is right now, would it look better in an accent color? Also, cabinet makers sell sheets of thin plywood that match their cabinets and maybe that would blend better for you. I don’t think the brown looks bad, but I don’t have to live with it. I can understand wanting it white or a lighter color, though. You might even want to hang a really wide, short curtain there. If you want to experiment with color, go to a dollar store and buy cheap plastic tablecloths, cut them in half lengthwise and tape them over the current brown to see if you like the change. No commitment – cheap!

The kitchen light frames could probably be replaced, but instead, why not just paint them to match the ceiling? They’ll disappear right into it. Another idea would be to decorate the frames with coasters or garlands of vines or roses or something that you could glue on to add a little fun or interest to them. You could even paint phrases that you love on the sides. I love fluorescent lighting in a kitchen, so I understand how you’d miss them if they were gone. Remember that anything that goes up there will collect dust and grease, so think disposable or easy to clean.
